In 2026, the soccer World Cup and in 2028, the Olympic Games will be organize by the Trump administration. U S are expecting a lot of people to come. But do the foreigners REALLY want it ? Appraisal of the Trump’s policies toward foreigners.
Students :
Thousands of students are among the people affected by the Trump administration’s travel ban and restrictions on citizens from 19 countries. Some would-be international students are not showing up on American campuses this fall despite offers of admission because of bottlenecks with visa applications, which the Trump administration slowed this summer while it rolled out additional controls. Others have had second thoughts because of the administration’s wider immigration crackdown and the abrupt termination of some students’ legal status. Even some American natives move to Ireland, for instance, to make their studies.
Tourists :
In Buffalo Niagara falls, the reliable summer wave of Canadian visitors didn’t arrive this year. Local officials attribute the trend that first emerged in February to President Donald Trump’s return to the White House. They say his tariffs, immigration crackdown and repeated « jokes » about the U.S. acquiring Canada and Greenland alienated travelers from other parts of the world.
And it’s true for several hotspots like Las Vegas or Los Angeles, they have seen fewer foreign visitors last summer. Visits to the U.S. from overseas fell 11.6% in March compared to the same month last year. Air travel from Mexico dropped 23%. Donald Trump bullying is the cause and experts say this slowdown will last, maybe for several years.
Incidentally and to be in the news, mass murders and political violence (I distinguish the two) don’t help. More than one mass murder a day in a country full of arms, when you come from Swissterland, it looks a lot (the average in this country is one mass murder every three years, even if all men have a rifle at home because they are all in the army reserve).
Business travellers :
After September 11, 2001, videoconferencing became increasingly popular around the world. But when you don’t want your conversation, even a business one, to be intercepted by the big ears of Echelon or the CIA, as Edward Snowden demonstrated, you take a plane to meet your alter ego. Except that the tariff war unleashed by Donald Trump has significantly slowed down international trade – business travel to the U.S. fell 9% in April 2025 in global, and the number of business travelers from Western Europe fell 17.7%, specifically – and this will continue.
Workers :
Entering the United States, even legally or bona fide, like the temporary Korean workers sent by their boss to start Hyundai’s battery plant in Georgia, is a risk. Things are no longer joking at the border. And ICE is hiring 10,000 additional deportation agents. With the budget they have now, they can afford it. And much more.
Summary :
The United States is now a country where you risk being arrested by the border police and going to prison, where you risk being hit by a stray bullet in a gunfire, where food has become more expensive than elsewhere, especially eggs, where you could well catch measles or some other nasty thing : why would you go to this shithole country ?
