Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele is, however, very kind to Donald Trump. He welcomes into his maximum-security penitentiaries all the prisoners his buddy sends him. It doesn’t matter whether they are Salvadoran or from Nunavut. It’s his buddy who ties them up, telling him they’re a danger to global security.
But Donald is a strange friend. Among the migrants arrested on American soil, there are some Salvadorans who aren’t criminals but honest farmworkers or artisans, fathers or mothers of families, often large ones. Some of them undocumented of course, but hard workers. And they’re sent home by ICE like other undocumented migrants ? Of course, there’s no special treatment for all these country bumpkins.
More weird, the Trump administration knows well that the money sent home to their families by migrants from El Salvador who have gone to live in the United States represents 25% of El Salvador’s Gross Domestic Product (8,5 billions of dollars). By sending them back home, El Salvador’s impoverishment is deepened and further people are driving to despair. Please note : it’s the same with all countries sending workers to the United States ! We are adding despair to misery by deporting them.
But Nayib Bukele el Turco apparently doesn’t give a damn about his country; what interests him, is his bank account (at the Chase Manhattan ?) into which he personally receives a bonus for each migrant deported to his summer camps. But these were built with Salvadoran tax dollars.
Icing on the cake, for all migrants (the 40 millions of non-american people living on the United States soil) : in addition to the cessation of USAID programs in El Salvador and others countries, money orders issued from the United States to organizations like Western Union will be, according to the One Big Beautiful Wonderful Law, subject to a new tax : the rate is 3,5%. Bing !
That’s a well-thought-out policy, isn’t it ? Doing absolutely everything financially to discourage potential immigrants from entering… and making money. At the same time.
