Four on five : the majority of a panel of Brazilian Supreme Court justices on Thursday voted to convict former president Jair Bolsonaro of attempting a coup to remain in office despite his 2022 electoral defeat. The far-right politician who governed Brazil between 2019 and 2022 was found guilty.
Why the young democracy of Brazil has been able to judge and condemn its former president and accomplices after the assault on the parliament in Brazilia ? And why the old democracy of the United States didn’t suit Donald Trump for his coup attempt of January, 6th, 2021 ? May be because Brazilians were not afraid of a political trial. And also because they have known a dictatorship till 1985 and they don’t want it back. United states have never been ruled by generals. Now they are ruled by a tyrant which is almost the same.
That decision of justice – a pure brazilian internal affair – will deepen political divisions in Brazil and likely prompt a backlash from the capo di capi (i.e United States president Don Trump) who has already rise to 50% tariffs on most imports from the country.
