« Thanks to me, Coca-Cola is changing its recipe in the United States. I convinced them to change the composition of the soft drink for consumers in our beautiful country, who until now were entitled to high fructose corn syrup. I have spoken at length with Coca-Cola about using REAL cane sugar in Coke for the United States, and they agree to do so. I would like to thank all the managers at Coca-Cola. » says a message from Donald Trump. Coca-Cola has not confirmed.
The Coca-Cola Americans consume contains « high fructose corn syrup, » a highly processed sweetener whose health effects, compared to other forms of added sugar, have long been a source of controversy.
Simultaneously, to protest Donald Trump’s anti-immigration measures, a movement is urging the Latin American community to boycott American brands, particularly the giant Coca-Cola, a modest (250 000$) contributor to the Republican campaign. Should Donald Trump’s attempt to do the buzz be seen as active but clumsy support for Coca-Cola’s sales ?
Replacing corn with real sugar? The stock market seems to have overreacted : the consequence of Trump’s announcement was a drop in the share rates of the two largest publicly traded corn producers (Archer-Daniels-Midland and Ingredion). As soon as Trump gets involved in something these days, it quickly turn sour, even coke : thanks to him, it has become undrinkable !
